ARE YOU LEAVING OUT THIS ESSENTIAL KEY TO ACHIEVING YOUR NEW YEAR RESOLUTIONS

Updated: Mar 30

As a fitness professional over 35 years, I have worked with many clients making new year resolutions. As a Christian, I often wonder why we make resolutions and then go about sabotaging our commitment by not bringing God into the picture?

Phil. 4:13 says “I can do ALL things through Christ who strengthens me”.

Does that include weight loss? Is reading more books included?  Does that include spending more time with family? According to the Wall Street Journal, the top 3-4 resolutions made every year are:

  1.  lose weight;

  2.  eat healthier;

  3.  exercise more;

  4. spend less and save more money.

Can God help us with these?

Of course, He can. So why don’t we include Him as part of our resolution? Why don’t we claim His verses to make the resolutions happen? Why don’t we lean on Him for strength and discipline when we are trying to fulfill our resolutions?

Afterall we turn to God for so many other things in life – relationships, buying a house, a new job, selecting a church, etc. But I have found when it comes to something we may think God considers frivolous we don’t ask for help. Or is it that we really don’t want to succeed because it means giving up something that we really don’t want to give up?

I know that God cares if something bothers us like being overweight. I know that God cares if we feel bad about something and it holds us back from really living in His joy and becoming all that He created us to be. John 15:11 states “These things I have spoken to you, that my joy may be in you, and that your joy may be full.”

God cares about our health and self-image. It is part of us and He loves us very much. He knows everything we think about so He hears us when we say we want to diet or exercise. He created our bodies and made them to move and do all kinds of great things. We are supposed to take care of our bodies – not abuse them with a poor diet. Yes enjoy a few things here and there but not every day. Your body is an intricately made machine that needs quality foods to fuel it. Poor diet is the leading cause of most diseases. Eating 4-5 small healthy meals that include a protein, grain and carbohydrate will make a difference. In fact, 65-70% of weight loss is through healthy diets.

Let’s make our New Year Resolutions and include God. Visualize them happening through Him, leaning on His strength, getting His support. Have FAITH He will help you make this happen. Let Phil. 4:13 be our motto and our hourly prayer and I know it will result in success! After all, ALL things are possible with God!
